KaptainMyke’s “KRANG’S GROSS DIMENSION X BODY” [PROGRESS] UPDATE

Check out KaptainMyke’s latest project – it’s  a big one!  It’s my very first custom action figure I’ve ever attempted to build.  I took a little bit of what I researched online and a little bit of what seems to make sense to me and cobbled together this insane idea in my head. For the sake of being the first in the world to attempt to build such an interesting figure, I will be unveiling progression photos and production notes.   I would like to simply call this figure “2017 Krang’s Original Alien Body”.

Let’s start with some background information, shall we?

1990 Krang’s Gross Dimension X Body Concept Sketch by Dan Berger and Stephen Murphy of Mirage Studios.

First of all, Krang’s Gross Dimension X Body is a failed concept drawing sketch from 1990 (by Dan Berger and Steven Murphy from Mirage Studios) of a toy presented to Playmates Toys for consideration of a new action figure.  The design and idea was scrapped and never to be seen or heard from again.  I am here presently trying to change that, in 2017.  I will be attempting to build the first prototype test shot real life example of this figure drawing.  It will not be easy, and will require countless hours of patience, time, and thoughtful engineering.

So let’s start with some drawings and show you where my Krang heads are gonna be screwed onto.  My initial idea in my head is to feature 3 removable heads:  A hand sculpted “Gross Head”, a “Broken Space Helmet Head”, and a glowing radioactive version of the standard classic pink “Krang Brain Head”.  See concept drawings:

So I figured, “What’s the best way to start?” I need a KRANG! Here we go:

I purchased a 1991 loose Krang's Giant 11" Android Body with Krang Brain and Bubble Walker.

I purchased a 1991 loose Krang’s Giant 11″ Android Body with Krang Brain and Bubble Walker.

Hmmm. “That’s not right. He looks fat!” I can fix this!

The next process is simple. I figured I needed a foundation or base for a core 4″ screw and bolt setup as a spine and plug for the removable heads. I also begin adding armature wire for sculpting the arms and hands by hand with clay. Very tedious process, but simple enough. I used Krazy Glue to glue the armature wire and drilled contact points for the wire. This will hopefully prevent cracking and make the arms resilient to twisting and turning at the shoulders.

After getting the arms and overall pose where I wanted it, I still considered the figure to be too bulky for all that clay I’m going to add on top of him – so off to the dremel tool we go!

I began added a very thin layer of clay in order to get a base for the bulk and mass that will become his arms and legs.  As you can see in the concept sketch, there is a lot of veins and bones from within a lot of muscle tissue mass.  So I figured, “I should start thin so I have plenty of surface area to work with later”

Original 1991 Krang's Giant Android Body with armature wire and beginning stages of building the 4 inch bolt and screw washer spinal core inside the torso. I haven't decided what I will use as mass for the stomach region yet. I tried styrofoam at first but it expands and the clay shrinks when dried so there was definite cracking. I decided to scrap that idea.

Eventually, the 14″ tall figure will be greenish with brown and grey overtones. He’s a lizard reptilian alien race. Only the brain is pink and squishy. I’m going completely by references of Krang creator David Wise who has stated via interviews, podcasts, blog posts, and forum posts consistently that Krang is not an Utrom and was once a reptilian who was stripped of his body on Dimension X.

This goes deep into the rabbit hole of things that never was but should have been. There are hints via various cartoon iterations that Krang is not what we all think he is or comes from where most think he came from. That’s another thing I love about the genius of this design and version of Krang. Conversely, the KRAANG we all know currently in the comics and cartoon is of an entire alien race from Dimension X. The older cartoons (2003) have shown in the past, Krang had cloned out into several bodies they are started walking upright and had tails like lizards. They looked like lizard people!

To be continued…

Well, that was the first 2 weeks. I’ll post more regarding sculpting of the heads and more!
